SOSORT 2019 Key Highlights

Prepared by Hagit Berdishevsky and Kelly Grimes

The International Society on Scoliosis Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) has been in existence since 2005 with one primary aim in mind - to improve the conservative care of patients with scoliosis and other spinal deformities.

The annual SOSORT conference provides a forum for the exchange of information and opportunities to build and strengthen relationships between researchers and clinicians.

This year’s conference saw the highest attendance in SOSORT history and host Grant Wood and his team at Align Clinic put on a fabulous show in what was a huge effort and a ton of work.

BSPTS has outstanding representation in the SOSORT organization. Andrea Lebel, an educator from Canada is the SOSORT secretary. Hagit Berdishevsky, an educator from New York is a chair of the Education Committee with Sanja Sheriber from Canada. Prachi Bakarania and Kelly Grimes, Lab Assistant Level II, from New York are the chairs of the Communication Committee.

Prior to the start of the meeting, two special topics groups met in collaboration and consensus-building.  Dr. Michael Vitale and Dr. Ben Roye from Columbia Medical Center in NYC led a group of physicians, orthotists and physiotherapists (all SOSORT members and leaders) in one of the final stages of a Delphi process to come to a consensus on best practice guidelines around bracing for the management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.  Dr. Stefano Negrini, chair of the Consensus committee, led a group that is quite close to establishing a classification system to better describe various scoliosis braces.

An important part of SOSORT conferences is the Education Pre-Course day, organized and hosted by the SOSORT Education Committee chaired by our own SBI educatorm Hagit Berdishevsky and Sanja Sheriber .

This year, the educational day focused on Growth and Development in Scoliosis - Biomechanical, Physiological, and Psychological Intricacies
The pre-conference course was hailed as “The best Education Pre-course so far!” by Dr. Manuel Rigo and more.

Participants had an opportunity to learn from some of the biggest names in the field of scoliosis, some of which have a several decades long legacy!

Presentations will soon be uploaded to the SOSORT website.

Scientific Committee Chair Lori Dolan and her team put on a stellar research conference with high quality oral and poster presentations with clinicians and researchers from all over the world showcasing their work with ensuing discussions and learnings.

This year’s winning award paper was very much related to what we are doing day in and day out and was delivered by Alessandra Negrini representing the work of the ISICO/Italian group: Impact of Sports Activity on Full-Time Braced Patients: An Observational Study of 785 Risser 0-2 Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Eric Parent. Phd, from Canada proved to us, again, that Schroth exercises work representing the research team at Alberta University: Immediate Frontal and Transversal Deformity Reduction during Schroth Physiotherapeutic Scoliosis-Specific Exercises Correction in Patients with Adolescents Idiopathic Scoliosis.Among the series of exercises side-lying was the most effective for lumbar curve and prone on stool for thoracic curve.

The best part of the meeting as always was opportunities to connect with old friends and make new friends in a collaborative and supportive setting.
